In April 2010, Tasmania will once again become petrol-head heaven as over 300 of the world’s finest road cars get the green light in the 2010 Targa Tasmania rally.

“Targa Tasmania is a genuine red-blooded motor sport competition,” says Event Director, Mark Perry. “It is also a unique opportunity for the owners of sports cars and GTs to drive them the way they were designed to be driven, on some of the most exciting and challenging tarmac roads in the world.”

Competitors will race across 2,000 kilometres of Australia’s most scenic roads in an effort to be to win this prestigious title. Past competitors include Sir Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Denny Hulme, Peter Brock and Eric Bana.

Kiwi motor racing legend, and eight-time Targa Tasmania champion, Jim Richards will return to the island state in his Porsche 911 GT2 in an effort to win his ninth title. However, current champion Tony Quinn of Queensland will be back in a new 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R to defend his title.

Another well known Kiwi will also be taking part in the 2010 Targa. TV3’s Shaun Summerfield will be making his Targa Tasmania debut in April, driving a Mazda MX-5.

The invitation only event features an impressive field, which includes some of the world’s most exotic sports cars including the Aston Martin Vantage, Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche GT2 and Chevrolet Corvette, as well as the Japanese super cars such as the Nissan Skyline GT-R, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, and Subaru WRX STi.

With over 300 cars competing, there is something for every motoring enthusiast. Classes include Unique, Vintage Rallye, Rookie Rallye – Classic, Rookie Rallye – Modern, Classic, Early Modern, Modern and Showroom.

Targa Tasmania is a spectator friendly event with special viewing points set up allowing rally fans to get up close to the action while the experienced team of spectator marshals strive to uphold the highest safety standards in motorsport.

With the thrills and spills of rallying as well as the style and beauty of exotic sports cars, Targa Tasmania is ultimate motoring event for car enthusiasts.
