Black Sticks defender James Nation (105 caps) has announced his retirement from the national team, ending a successful 6-year career. Nation, (33), debuted for New Zealand in 2003 and lists his career highlight as “living out his childhood dream of going to the Olympics, playing at the Hockey World Cup and travelling to some pretty cool places in between times.” National Coach Shane McLeod recognised Nation’s contributions: “James has made a huge commitment to the programme after 6 years of international competition. He’s been an ‘A’ student in regard to keeping his body in excellent condition, as well as being a great role model for young players.” Nation acknowledged the support of several coaches and managers during his Black Sticks career: “I would like to thank Shane McLeod and the current management for all your support as well as Kevin Towns and co in the previous Black Sticks set up” James wished the men’s team good luck for 2010, commenting that “next year will be a huge one” with the World Cup in February-March, the Champions Trophy in August and the Commonwealth Games in October.
