Friday, 18 December 2009 00:00
Black Sticks Simon Child and Gemma Flynn have been selected among only the best players in the world for the FIH World Hockey All Star Teams. This is the fourth year in a row that the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has created these elite formations. The WorldHockey All Star Teams 2009 were selected by visitors of the official website of the FIH www.worldhockey.org. Out of the hundreds of people voting, the FIH created the Men’s and Women’s All Star Teams. The composition of each team is 18 players and two coaches.

Both Simon and Gemma have a list of successes for 2009 and are due to their individual and team performances. On the Men’s side, Simon was part of the Junior Black Sticks who finished up in 4th
place overall (their best ever finish) at the Junior World Cup in June this year. The success of this tournament was then capped off for Child, when he was named Player of the Tournament, of which he
was only a few goals off on being named Top Goal scorer also. Flynn equally has had a shining year, like Child, playing for both the Junior Black Sticks and Black Sticks teams. Gemma was named Player
of the Tournament at the BDO Champions Challenge in October and was also part of the Black Sticks Women’s side who won the Oceania Cup a couple of months earlier in Invercargill.

Simon and Gemma make a successful pair within their respective Black Sticks sides, where they have been recently nominated (again by the FIH) for the Young Player of the Year Award. Unfortunately
both missed out on the final title. They share further accolades within their Black Sticks teams, with both sides having won their respective Champions Challenge tournaments promoting each team up to the Champions Trophy tournament of which the top 6 countries in the world compete in. The Women will compete in their Champions Trophy in Nottingham in July 2010, while the Men will do the same
the month following in Monchengladbach, Germany. These two tournaments will set the Black Sticks up nicely for their Commonwealth Games campaigns later in the year in October in Delhi, India.
