New Zealand is now top of Pool C after a 4:0 win over Spain in their second match at the BDO Junior World Cup.

After their 3:1 win over the Netherlands on Monday 3rd August, New Zealand was looking to back up their strong performance. The team was 1:0 up at half time after a penalty corner deflection goal from Petrea Webster. Overall the first half was a tired performance, with inaccurate passing and over dribbling. There were many circle penetrations, however some poor decision making meant that these were not converted into goals. The Spanish were unlucky not to level the match when they failed to convert a penalty stroke.

New Zealand lifted their performance in the second half, with a very strong last 20 minutes resulting in 3 goals – a field goal and a direct hit from a penalty corner to Katie Glynn and the last one a deflection from a penalty corner by Gemma Flynn in the last minutes of the game.

Coach Chris Leslie says “obviously happy to secure the win, however the team will need to lift its physical work rate and concentrate on their passing game to continue to compete with the top teams at the tournament”.

Next match: JBS Women v China, Thursday 6th August at 17:00 Boston time – Friday 7th August at 09:00 NZ time. (Boston is 16 hours behind)
