Cardiff City Announce New Stadium Opening PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 March 2009 10:31

Cardiff City Football Club is delighted to announce the opening of its new £50m+ football stadium at Leckwith, Cardiff. The long awaited state of the art stadium will have its official opening on Wednesday 22nd July 2009.

In keeping with the historic nature of this new stadium, Cardiff City Chairman, Peter Ridsdale is also delighted to announce that the opponents to play against Cardiff City on the opening night will be the World famous ‘Celtic Football Club’.

The match will kick off at 7.45pm. Celtic’s legendary former manager Jock Stein, died in the dug out at Cardiff City’s present stadium, Ninian Park, whilst in charge of the Scotland National team against Wales on 10th September 1985 and it is therefore particularly appropriate that Celtic Football Club will provide the first opposition in Cardiff City’s new home.

In accepting Cardiff City’s invitation to open their new stadium, Peter Lawwell Chief Executive of Celtic said “We are pleased to play our part in the opening of such a prestigious new venue. It will be a fantastic occasion for both sets of supporters”.

Cardiff City’s new stadium is a purpose built, 27,000 capacity all seater stadium, it has one of the largest restaurants in Cardiff seating approx 750 diners and the stadium has planning consent to increase its capacity, if wanted in the future, in stages up to 60,000. The stadium was built by Laing O’Rourke and will be handed over to Cardiff City management a few weeks ahead of schedule and on budget.
