England Women Take The Deciding Twenty 20 Game PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 00:00

With one game a piece both teams went in the final decider looking for a series win. England outclassed the Indians to win the final game by five wickets with four balls remaining. England 126 for five, India 125 for four.

England skipper Charlotte Edwards won the toss and took to the field with her team. Jenny Gunn was on form right from the word go and took the first wicket landing a lovely catch at mid-on, to see off Naik for one off the third ball of the game, delivered by Katherine Brunt.

The world champions continued their dynamic fielding displayed throughout the tour, with wickets being shared around the bowlers. Spinner Danielle Hazell took the inform, Mithali Raj at India’s halfway mark, to stem the accumulation of runs, India 56 for three. Nicky Shaw then bowled Chopra for 22 to leave India 112 for four. Earlier, Tammy Beaumont stumped Raut for 26 off a ball from Marsh to restrict the runs added by India’s top order.
India finished their innings on 123 for four, once again without the input of injured Jhulan Goswami.

England looked a different side with the bat than of recent games. Edwards opened with Hazell with the tactics of moving some strikers higher up the order. This paid dividends when Laura Marsh came to the crease to hit 47 not our off 53, with five boundaries to be top run scorer of the game.

The bat also faired well for Gun and Beth Morgan, better than in previous games. Morgan and Marsh added 49 in their partnership, taking their opportunities to hit the boundary against David and Gouhar Sultana. Naik stumped Morgan off a ball from David, but only after Morgan had put on 28 off 21 balls, to leave England on 72 for four at the halfway mark of their innings. Gunn then picked up with Marsh to take England within sight of sealing the series, adding on 22 before being bowled by Sultana, to leave England on 116 for five, needing 10 off 12 in the last two overs. Cool under pressure and unperturbed by the ball to her face earlier in the field, Lydia Greenway stepped up to face the Indian spinners to pick up three runs and put Marsh on strike. Marsh took the game in style for England driving the ball deep in the covers, for her fifth boundary of the game.

England Women won the Twenty20 series from India 2-1.

After the game captain Charlotte Edwards said: ‘It is great to finish the tour on a real high. Our priority was to win the Twenty20 series. We have all worked hard as a team throughout the to ur, it has been great to see some of the younger girls getting international experience and making the most of their opportunities. I’m looking forward to the defending our Twenty20 title in the West Indies’.
